In July 2010 Jonathan Faull was appointed Director General for Internal Market and Services at the European Commission, under Michel Barnier, in the Commission Directorate that will be most influential in pursuing the regulatory reform agenda for financial services, replacing fellow Briton David Wright in the position.
Faull, born in 1954, acted as chief spokesman for Romano Prodi, the Italian head of the European Commission from 1999 to 2003.
He made his name ten years earlier in the Cabinet of the former British Commissioner Sir Leon (now Lord) Brittan when he was responsible for drafting the policy on mergers. Mr Faull was born in Chatham and won a scholarship to Charterhouse, the public school, going on to study law and French at the Universities of Sussex and Geneva.
