Sir Nigel Wicks

Member of the EU (Lamfalussy) Committee of 'Wise Men' on European Securities Regulation, & Deputy Chairman of Euroclear
 

Sir Nigel Wicks became Deputy Chairman of Euroclear in September on that company's merger with CRESTCo of which he had been Chairman since May 2001. Between July 2000 and February 2001 Nigel was a member of the EU Committee of 'Wise Men' on European Securities Regulation. Sir Nigel Wicks has had extensive experience as a senior civil servant in the British Government. He has worked on two occasions at 10 Downing Street (as Private Secretary to Mr Wilson and to Mr Callaghan and later as Principal Private Secretary to Mrs Thatcher). He has been the United Kingdom's Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund and World Bank and the Prime Minister's representative ("Sherpa") for the Economic Summits of the Group of Seven Industrialised Nations. While Second Permanent Secretary at the Treasury responsible for international financial issues between 1989 and 2000, he was chairman for 5 years of the European Union's Monetary Committee, which assisted EU Finance Ministers prepare for economic and monetary union. Before joining the civil service, he worked for the British Petroleum Co Ltd, at their head office in London, at a refinery in Wales and in the Libyan desert. The Prime Minister, Mr Tony Blair, appointed him in March 2001 to the Chair of the Committee on Standards in Public Life. Between 1959-63 he attended a sandwich course on business administration at the Portsmouth College of Technology, now the University of Portsmouth, and later went to the Universities of Cambridge and London.
